Safety Management Systems Training (USA)

Overview

SMS is a proactive approach to safety that has been adopted by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

This course will introduce you to the key principles and concepts of Safety Management Systems (SMS) and the U.S. regulations that pertain to them.

It will also explore the four basic components of SMS required by the FAA.

  • Explain the key principles, concepts, and processes of SMS.
  • Describe the major benefits of SMS.

Safety Policy

  • The purpose of a Safety Policy.
  • The key elements of a Safety Policy.

Safety Risk Management

  • The importance, and key elements, of Safety Risk Management.
  • The steps involved in identifying hazards, analyzing the risk they pose, and implementing and tracking mitigations.
  • The FAA’s requirements for Safety Risk Management documentation.
  • The importance of non-punitive hazard reporting.

Safety Assurance

  • The important role that Safety Assurance plays within SMS.
  • FAA requirements for monitoring safety performance and reporting safety issues.

Safety Promotion

  • The key components of Safety Promotion – culture, training, and communication.

Assessment

This course includes an integrated online assessment.

Candidates must successfully complete the assessment to receive a Certificate of Completion.
