Runway Safety Management

Overview

Runway Safety is a significant challenge and a top priority for airport operations. 

The Runway Safety Management course provides methodologies and best practices to assist airport operators to counter the risks associated with runway operations and achieve a ‘state of the art’ level of runway safety. 

Please note – this course is also available in French and Spanish.

Learning Objectives

On completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Recognize industry best practices with regards to runway planning, design, maintenance and operation.
  • Understand how to develop an effective runway safety program, including the establishment of a Local Runway Safety Team.
  • Understand how to tailor, improve and expand on their existing runway safety programs.
  • Take action to prevent runway incursions and excursions.

The Runway Safety Management course covers the following topics:

Runway Safety

  • The importance of runway safety.
  • Runway Safety Teams.
  • Identifying ‘hot spots’ and runway hazards.
  • The role of training and safety awareness programs.

Planning and Design

  • The importance of the Airport Master Plan in runway planning and design.
  • Key design elements that improve operational efficiency and maximize runway safety.
  • Eliminating runway incursion risks.
  • Visual aids – including markings, signs and lighting.

Runway Inspections & Reporting

  • Major elements of a runway inspection program.
  • Requirements for reporting runway surface conditions.
  • Measuring runway surface friction.

Low Visibility Procedures & NAVAIDs

  • Procedures required to ensure the safe operation of aircraft during low visibility conditions.
  • Protecting the operation of Navigational Aids (NAVAIDs).

Operations

  • Key runway hazards – including wildlife and Foreign Object Debris (FOD) – and how to prevent and manage these.
  • Obstacle Limitation Surfaces (OLS).
  • Communication procedures.
  • Vehicle driver training requirements.
  • Incident reporting and investigation.
  • Disseminating Aeronautical Information.

Runway Maintenance

  • The importance of maintaining the runway surface condition.
  • Preventative maintenance programs for visual and non-visual aids.
  • Common runway contaminants and removal procedures.

Temporary Restrictions

  • Declared Distances and Displaced Thresholds.
  • Disseminating information regarding temporary changes to the manoeuvring area.
  • The impact of reduced Rescue and Fire Fighting, temporary obstacles and runway closures on airside operations.

Construction Safety

  • Key risks associated with airside construction and how to manage these
  • Construction Safety Plans.
  • Closing construction and re-opening runways.

Assessment

This course includes an integrated online assessment.  

Candidates must successfully complete the assessment to receive a Certificate of Completion.
