Risk Mitigation of Airside Operations

January 2014

A lot has been said about how ground handling operators, airports and airlines can better communicate to manage conflicting responsibilities of airside operations. According to the 2013 ICAO Annual Safety Report, one can argue that a lot has been accomplished since the number of accidents decreased by 21%.

As the safety record keeps improving, it may seem harder to justify new safety measures and what they could bring in terms of improved performance. On the other hand, one has to look at the expected industry growth curve to realize that promoting a “safety culture” is of the utmost importance.

The “safety culture” was well described last year by Gordon Dupont during the Business Aviation Safety Seminar that took place in Montreal. Not surprisingly, the fact that “all company employees are trained and encouraged to think and work safely” is high on the list of necessary steps to achieve a true safety culture!
